HBO dropped two hit series, The Young Pope and its follow-up, The New Pope, in 2016 and 2020, respectively. Both star-studded series created a buzz among the audience and kept them binge-watching the episodes.

The franchise features powerful performances from actors Jude Law and John Malkovich, elevating the series and captivating the audience.

Two-time Oscar nominee Jude Law stars as Pope Pius XIII and perfectly showcases the bold, mysterious, and intense, adding both holy and subversive layers to his character.

Meanwhile, John Malkovich portrays the role of Pope John Paul III, nailing the quieter and more thoughtful side of the character.

For the unversed, The Young Pope is a satirical drama television series that revolves around Lenny Belardo, alias Pius XIII, the first American Pope in history and the beginning of the pontificate.

Lenny shocks the Vatican by challenging the traditions of the Church and those around him, including allies and enemies within the Vatican. The 10-episode limited series also features Diane Keaton as Sister Mary.

However, the follow-up HBO series The New Pope continues the plot with Pope Pius XIII, aka Lenny, in a coma, leaving the Vatican in need of a new leader. After a failed attempt to install a temporary pope, the Church turns to Sir John Brannox, an elegant, intelligent, and emotionally fragile English aristocrat who becomes Pope John Paul III.

The nine-episode series explores Pope John Paul III being entangled with political tension within the Vatican, global threats, and the looming presence of Lenny, whose cult-like followers await his possible return.
