Shazia Iqbal’s Dhadak 2, starring Siddhant Chaturvedi and Triptii Dimri, hit cinemas this Friday.
Serving as a spiritual sequel to the 2018 film Dhadak, which featured Ishaan Khatter and Janhvi Kapoor, the film is an adaptation of the critically acclaimed Tamil movie Pariyerum Perumal. Despite being backed by Karan Johar's Dharma Productions, the film had a relatively low-key opening at the domestic box office.
According to a trading website, Dhadak 2 collected an estimated Rs 2.94 crore net on its first day across Indian theatres.
This figure falls short when compared to Siddhant Chaturvedi’s previous outing Yudhra, which had a stronger opening at Rs 4.5 crore net. Triptii Dimri, who was last seen in the blockbuster Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3, had witnessed a significantly higher opening for that film, with collections reaching ₹35.5 crore.
On Friday, Dhadak 2 registered a nationwide Hindi (2D) occupancy rate of just 19.78%. The film's performance gradually improved through the day, beginning with 15.02% occupancy for morning shows, rising to 22.29% in the afternoon, and maintaining similar figures in the evening at 22.03%. The night shows saw a slight bump, registering an occupancy of 32.07%, indicating a hopeful trend heading into the weekend.
The film explores a hard-hitting theme centred around caste discrimination. It follows the journey of a law student who falls in love with his classmate, only to face relentless harassment from her family due to caste differences.

Speaking about the film’s sensitive subject matter, Siddhant Chaturvedi told PTI, “It is a huge responsibility... A lot of the credit goes to our director, who from day one was very sure of what she wanted and how she wanted to tell the story, how the characters should be, she didn't want to over-dramatise anything or oversimplify anything. She just wanted things to be as they are in reality.”
As the weekend unfolds, it remains to be seen whether word-of-mouth and audience interest can help Dhadak 2 gain momentum.
