Deepika Padukone plays the character of SU-M80, also known as Sumathi, in Kalki 2898 AD. According to Saswata Chatterjee, who plays Commander Manas in the film, Deepika’s role required her to perform in physically demanding scenes, even as she was expecting her first child with husband Ranveer Singh. Saswata explained that the climax scene involved a tussle between his character and Ashwatthama, played by Amitabh Bachchan, where he drags SU-M80 away by her hair. The scene was shot in Mumbai as part of the last leg of filming.
Saswata recalled the scene, stating, “Deepika is just ever-smiling. There is a scene in the film where I drag her by the hair. It was part of the last leg of the shoot and was shot in Mumbai because Deepika was pregnant by then. There was a lot of physical tussle in the scene, so I told Ranveer, don’t worry, for more physically challenging scenes, there is a body double. He was so polite and humble. He smiled and said, I know, Dada.”
Ranveer Singh, known for his energetic personality, was present on the set during these crucial moments. Saswata described him as someone who "can't stand in one place" and recalled how Ranveer was dressed in an orange ensemble from top to bottom when they met. Despite the challenging circumstances, Deepika’s professionalism shone through, and she managed to deliver her performance with grace and determination.
Deepika and Ranveer, who got married in 2018, are expecting their first child in September 2024. The couple announced the pregnancy in February, following months of speculation, particularly after Deepika’s appearance at the BAFTAs. The couple shared their joy with the world through a social media post, stating, "September 2024," accompanied by motifs of baby clothes, baby shoes, and balloons.
The film Kalki 2898 AD also stars Prabhas, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan. After the completion of this film, Deepika is set to appear in Rohit Shetty's Singham Again. Her dedication to her craft, even during pregnancy, is a testament to her commitment and passion for acting.
Saswata's interview not only highlights Deepika’s professionalism but also sheds light on the supportive nature of her husband, Ranveer Singh. His presence on the set and his understanding of the physical demands of the role speak volumes about their relationship.
