When a marriage breaks, families often fracture quietly — and Soha Ali Khan says she’s lived through that process with empathy. In an exclusive conversation with Nayandeep Rakshit, Soha opened up about navigating her brother Saif Ali Khan’s divorce from Amrita Singh, revealing how the transition impacted her personally.
“These are things that you don’t have any control over,” Soha reflected. “When a marriage ends, then those families also go through some kind of change and adjustment, and you may find your own independent equation after some time, but it’s complicated.”
The actor and author recalled how close she was to Amrita during those early years.
“For me, Amrita was someone who I have lived with in her house. She has looked after me. She has taken me for photoshoots and done so much. We have played Scrabble together,” Soha said.
But when Saif and Amrita’s relationship ended in 2004, it meant everyone had to find new ground. “Of course, you go through a moment of processing and transition, and you allow them to find their equation and then you have to find your own equation within that. That’s something we went through. Now there is a kind of settlement — the children are all grown up. You can be yourself in a way. Sara and Ibrahim were very young then,” she added.
Their mother, veteran actress Sharmila Tagore, has earlier spoken about that difficult time on Koffee With Karan: “When you are together for such a long time and you have two lovely children, then no breakup is easy. It hurts. That stage was not nice. But I tried.”
On the ‘Love Jihad’ Label and Interfaith Marriage
She further said in the interview that online trolls often target such unions under the term “love jihad' hinting at Saif and Kareena, her father's marriage with Sharmila Tagore.
“There’s going to be lots of haters, there’s going to be lots of voices, and that’s also okay. I am fine with everyone having an opinion, and that’s all fine. So I think these things like… interfaith marriage, even when Kunal and I got married…"
“Even when Kareena and bhai got married, there were lots of strange things – Love Jihad, Ghar Wapsi, all kinds of weird headlines were being made as well. You know, ‘You took one of ours, now we will take one of yours’."
While Saif went on to marry Kareena Kapoor in 2012, and the couple now have two sons, Taimur and Jeh, his first wife Amrita Singh remains single.
But Soha pointed out that there’s peace now within the family and love runs deep for both Sara and Ibrahim.
