The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) Chief Asaduddin Owaisi, on April 13, announced a strategic alliance with All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) for the 18th Lok Sabha elections, extending their partnership until the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Owaisi's move comes hot on the heels of the AIADMK's decision to sever ties with the BJP, citing the sentiments of its party members and constituents. Despite their historical affiliation, the AIADMK affirmed its stance against aligning with the BJP in both current and future elections.

He took to microblogging site X to announce, “AIADMK has refused to ally with BJP and has committed to never allying with it in the future. It has also assured that it will oppose CAA, NPR & NRC. Therefore, AIMIM extends its support to AIADMK in the coming Lok Sabha elections. Our alliance will also continue for the Assembly elections".

The AIMIM Chief slammed the central government's enactment of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), deeming it "unconstitutional."

He criticised the BJP for passing a law that discriminates based on religion, contradicting the principle of equality. Owaisi went as far as tearing a copy of the CAA bill in Parliament to underscore his protest.

The 2024 Lok Sabha elections are slated to unfold across seven phases, commencing on April 19 and concluding on June 1, with results expected on June 4.

Tamil Nadu, comprising 39 Lok Sabha seats, will hold its election on April 19, in a single phase.

In this context, AIMIM's support for AIADMK underscores a shared opposition to the CAA, NPR, and NRC, fortifying their alliance for both the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections.
