The Aam Aadmi Party is contesting the 2024 elections alongside the Indian National Congress as part of the INDIA coalition. But will this move be enough to challenge BJP in Delhi?
The 2019 elections saw all seven seats in Delhi Chandni Chowk, North East Delhi, East Delhi, New Delhi, North West Delhi, West Delhi and South Delhi, being won by the Bharatiya Janata Party. 2014 had seen a similar result with the BJP winning all the seats by defeating the Indian National Congress.
Interestingly, the Aam Aadmi Party has till date not won a Lok Sabha seat in Delhi.
If we look at numbers, the BJP has been shoring up voters over the past two elections. The Congress commanded a vote share of about 57% in 2009 which fell to 15% in the 2014 elections. The AAP polled 33% of the votes in 2014 and 18% in 2019.
Despite the dismal numbers in 2019, the AAP won 62 of the 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly elections in 2020, leaving the BJP with the balance 8.
For the 2024 General Elections, the Aam Aadmi Party will be contesting in four of the seats.

The candidates fighting elections for the Aam admi Party are Kuldeep Kumar who takes on BJP’s Harsh Malhotra in East Delhi; Somnath Bharti, MLA from Malviya Nagar and a senior leader in the party takes on BJP’s Bansuri Swaraj, daughter of late Sushma Swaraj, in New Delhi; Mahabal Mishra who is challenging Kamaljeet Sehrawat of BJP in West Delhi and Sahi Ram Pehelwan who is fighting Ramvir Singh Bidhuri in South Delhi.
Will the Aam Aadmi Party finally win a Lok Sabha seat? Will the election alliance with the Congress bear fruit? Will, as AAP hopes, anti-incumbency feelings sweep BJP voters towards it? With party president Arvind Kejriwal in jail, it’s all uncertain with the AAP.
