JNU best for development studies in India, IIM-Ahmedabad for management: QS World University Rankings

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has excelled particularly in Data Science, securing a global ranking of 51-70, and Petroleum Engineering, where it ranks 51-100 globally.

Global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds released the fourteenth edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject.

India's ranked entries and overall performance soared by 19 percent and 17 percent, respectively in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024, released today, April 10.

Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) is India's highest-ranked university, in 20th spot globally for development studies. Further, the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Ahmedabad is among the top 25 institutions around the globe for business and management studies with IIM-Bangalore and Calcutta in the top 50.

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati has excelled particularly in Data Science, securing a global ranking of 51-70, and Petroleum Engineering, where it ranks 51-100 globally.

Meanwhile, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences (SIMATS), Chennai, grabbed the 24th position globally for dentistry studies.

“India now world's fourth-largest producer of research, on brink of overtaking the UK…India undeniably becoming a formidable player in the international academic community,” a QS official said, as quoted by PTI.

QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024

Global higher education analyst QS Quacquarelli Symonds released the fourteenth edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject: an independent comparative analysis of academic excellence featuring more than 1500 universities in 96 countries and territories across 55 disciplines.

Over 60 universities have made a debut with 14 of them being completely new entrants making their first appearance in any QS ranking, including Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology (DGIST), Osaka Metropolitan University, and University of Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Music is the one new subject to be added to this year's rankings, while the data science & artificial intelligence ranking has been expanded and has 51 new institutions included this year.

The US universities lead in 32 subjects. Harvard University is the world's strongest-performing institution, first in 19 disciplines. MIT follows, leading in 11 subjects.

The UK institutions lead 16 subjects. The University of Oxford tops four, followed by the University of Cambridge, UCL, Royal College of Art and Royal College of Music with two.

Further, Switzerland boasts the highest concentration of #1 entries (4) proportionally to its ranked universities. ETH Zurich leads in three subjects, making it Continental Europe's strongest institution.
