Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke on the sidelines of the United Nations conference, addressing the ongoing war with Russia.
"One of the permanent members of this council is doing everything to prolong the largest war in Europe since World War two. Russia does this with impunity, using its veto power, buying influence and keeping peace on hold," Zelenskyy said.
Russia is one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, where measures require a unanimous vote to pass.
"China is also represented here, a powerful nation on which Russia now depends completely," Zelenskyy added. "If China truly wanted this war to stop, it could compel Moscow to end the invasion. Without China, (Russian President Vladimir) Putin's Russia is nothing. Yet too often, China stays silent and distant instead of active for peace."
The five permanent members of the UN Security Council are Russia, China, the United States, France, and the United Kingdom. China has long provided material support to Moscow, including dual-use products needed to maintain weapons like drones and tanks, and has supplied lethal drones for battlefield use.
"I met with President Trump just now, and we spoke about how to finally bring peace," Zelenskyy said. "And we discussed a few good ideas, and I hope they will work. And I'm grateful for this meeting. And we expect America's actions to push Russia toward peace. Moscow fears America and always pays attention to it."
Trump's social media post following their meeting, in which he suggested Ukraine could reclaim all its territory, represents a notable shift in the U.S. president’s stance.
