Since its launch in May 2023, the ChatGPT mobile app has generated a staggering $2 billion in global consumer spending across iOS and Android, according to new data from Appfigures (via TechCrunch). The momentum has only accelerated in 2025, with revenue growing 673% year-over-year.
The app has already clocked 318 million downloads this year — 2.8 times more than in the same period last year. India leads lifetime installs with 13.7% of the total, followed by the US at 10.3%. Yet, when it comes to spending, American users remain the powerhouse, contributing nearly 40% of ChatGPT’s global revenue. Average spending per download in the U.S. is a hefty $10, with Germany trailing far behind at 5.3%.
Globally, ChatGPT leads all competitors in lifetime revenue per install, averaging $2.91. Anthropic’s Claude follows at $2.55, while Elon Musk’s Grok stands at $0.75. Microsoft’s Copilot app lags at just $0.27.
One reason for Grok’s underperformance, analysts suggest, is its late mobile debut. xAI launched Grok in November 2023, but the standalone iOS app only arrived in January 2025, with Android support following in March. That delay has limited its ability to build momentum in the app economy.
The new numbers also put recent remarks from Elon Musk into perspective. Just days ago, Musk accused Apple of favouring OpenAI and claimed it was “impossible” for competitors to top App Store charts. Ironically, Grok itself publicly disagreed, and Appfigures’ data makes the scale of ChatGPT’s lead clear. So far in 2025 alone, ChatGPT has earned $1.35 billion from mobile revenue — 53 times more than Grok’s $25.6 million.
