Lionel Messi made the football world emotional after sharing pictures from his visit to Camp Nou on Sunday (November 9). It was the first time the FC Barcelona legend had been at the stadium since leaving the club.
The 8-time Ballon d'Or winner shared a heartfelt note on his Instagram account with pictures from the stadium, "Last night I returned to a place I miss with my soul. A place where I was immensely happy, where you guys made me feel a thousand times the happiest person in the world."
“I hope one day I can come back, and not just to say goodbye as a player, as I never got to…” he added.
Messi's message clearly showed his love for the club and got the fans emotional. He parted ways with the club in 2021 due to some financial constraints the club was facing during that period.
He joined French club Paris Saint-Germain and one year later won the FIFA World Cup with Argentina in 2022. Later on, he moved to Inter Miami in the USA which marked the end of his European club career.
Earlier this month, Barcelona president Joan Laporta expressed his wish to give Messi the farewell he could not get in 2021. The renovated Camp Nou is expected to reopen in 2026.
“It would be wonderful to reopen the stadium with a full crowd honouring Leo,” Laporta said earlier this month.
