India captain Rohit Sharma's statement on his future after winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 cleared up a lot of rumours. There was much speculation about his future in international cricket, but the Indian skipper brushed aside all the murmurs in classic Rohit Sharma fashion:
"I am not going to retire from this format. Just to make sure no rumours are spread moving forward. Koi future plan hai nahi, jo chal raha hai, chalega (There is no future plan; whatever is going on will continue as it is)."
His message was clear, and the statement quickly went viral.
A day after winning his fourth ICC title, Rohit gave a more detailed response about his career plan moving forward.

"Right now, I am taking things as they come. It wouldn't be fair for me to think too far ahead. At this moment, my focus is on playing well and maintaining the right mindset. I don't want to draw any lines and say whether I will or won't play in the 2027 World Cup," he said on Jio Hotstar.
"There's no point in making such statements right now. Realistically, I have always taken my career one step at a time."
However, a Cricbuzz report suggests that Rohit has made up his mind to play the 2027 ODI World Cup.
"If things go according to plan, he might exit international cricket after the quadrennial ICC event, to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia," read the Cricbuzz report.
In two months, Rohit will turn 38 years of age and by the 2028 World Cup begins he will be 40. As per the report, Rohit Sharma will work with assistant coach Abhishek Nayar for 'fitness, batting, and approach.'

Till the 2027 ICC event, Men in Blue are expected to play 27 games in the ODI format. More matches could be added to the roster later and Rohit is expected to take part in these in order to prepare for the mega tournament.
Nayar to play a crucial role
Assistant coach of the Indian cricket team Abhishek Nayar is expected to play a crucial role preparing the 37-year-old skipper and batter for the World Cup. Nayar is highly recommended for his methods and is also a former teammate of Rohit.
The report stated that Rohit Sharma's Test future remains uncertain. His performance in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy was underwhelming, and his form in the IPL will play a crucial role in determining his selection for India's tour of England in June.
"Let the IPL be over first. Only an astrologer thinks so far ahead into the future," the report quoted a source as saying.
