Not Jasprit Bumrah or Rishabh Pant, Gautam Gambhir wants 23-year-old as next India captain after Rohit Sharma

It's worth noting that Pant, who has experience leading the Delhi domestic team, captained the Indian side in the June 2022 home T20I series against South Africa.

The recent BCCI review meeting had numerous topics to discuss but one of the major one was the future captaincy role after Rohit Sharma. India recently failed to impress in back to back Test series against New Zealand and Australia which has caused big concerns regarding the future of the Indian cricket team. A Dainik Jagran report suggests that head coach Gautam Gambhir and selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar identified India's future captain but found themselves in disagreement with two names.

On Sunday, the national daily reported that Rohit informed BCCI 'he will remain the captain' until the next skipper is picked in Tests and ODIs. The 37-year-old also added that the next candidate will fully get his support. All came to a conclusion that Rohit will remain skipper until the end of Champions Trophy and a call on the future will be taken once the tournament finishes.

During a review meeting discussing the possibility of Jasprit Bumrah succeeding Rohit Sharma as captain, the importance of appointing a strong vice-captain to manage the fast bowler's workload was also highlighted. While the selectors favored Rishabh Pant as the next Test captain, Gautam Gambhir expressed his support for Yashasvi Jaiswal for the role.

It's worth noting that Pant, who has experience leading the Delhi domestic team, captained the Indian side in the June 2022 home T20I series against South Africa. He stepped in after the designated captain, KL Rahul, was sidelined due to injury.

Why not Suryakumar Yadav?

Suryakumar Yadav’s chances of taking over the ODI captaincy after the Champions Trophy seem slim due to his ongoing struggles to secure a consistent spot in the ODI lineup. Reports indicate that India is unlikely to adopt the strategy of having three separate captains for different formats. Instead, Jasprit Bumrah is expected to lead both the Test and ODI teams, provided the selectors can identify a reliable vice-captain to step in during his absence—similar to Pat Cummins’ leadership arrangement in the Australian team.
