Gastroenterologist and gut health specialist Dr Pal Manickam spoke in detail about the potential health benefits of moringa.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, at the age of 75, is not only recognised for his political leadership but also for maintaining a disciplined lifestyle that includes a carefully chosen diet. His daily routine is said to revolve around simple and nutrient-rich foods, many of which reflect traditional Indian practices of wellness.

Among the regular items in his meals are moringa leaves, which he has publicly mentioned as one of his preferred dietary components. Health professionals often refer to moringa as a “miracle tree” because of its wide-ranging medicinal and nutritional benefits. The leaves are known to contain antioxidants that can protect the body against infections and oxidative stress.

Studies suggest that moringa supports cardiovascular health by lowering cholesterol, stabilises blood pressure, and enhances cognitive function by reducing stress. Being rich in fibre, the leaves also improve digestion and relieve constipation, making them suitable for daily consumption.

Gastroenterologist and gut health specialist Dr Pal Manickam spoke in detail about the potential health benefits of moringa. In one of his posts, he explained, “Moringa is a natural gut healer. It neutralises excess stomach acid after food moves into the intestine. It also has strong anti-inflammatory properties that help repair the gut lining and reduce long-term digestive issues caused by stress or frequent infections.”

Dr Manickam further highlighted the role of phytochemicals present in moringa, particularly glucosinolates. According to him, these compounds stimulate digestive secretions, allowing the body to break down food more effectively. He also noted research findings on moringa’s impact on diabetes management, stating that extracts from the plant have shown positive results in stabilising blood glucose and improving insulin sensitivity.

He added that such effects could assist patients with diabetes in preventing complications. Research published by Medical News Today also indicate that moringa might slow the progression of diabetes and offer protection to organs frequently affected by the disease.

In addition to moringa leaves, PM Modi is also known to include khichdi in his diet, a dish often associated with balance and lightness. He has also spoken about consuming neem flowers, neem leaves, and mishri.
