In 2016–17, Gaikwad made his first-class, List A, and T20 debuts. He excelled in the middle format, scoring 444 runs, which was the third-highest total in the Vijay Hazare Trophy that year. In a June 2019 List A match against Sri Lanka A, he scored 187 runs without giving up, demonstrating that he possessed all the necessary skills.
