India ODI squad vs Australia announced: Shubman Gill was appointed as the new ODI captain as BCCI announced the squad for the Australia tour on Saturday afternoon. The 26-year-old replaces Rohit Sharma at the helm, which comes as a major change in guard in the ODI setup.

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer, whose snub from Asia Cup created quite a buzz, has been promoted as vice-captain.

BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressing the media after releasing the squad confirmed that the decision was taken keeping the larger picture in mind, which is the next ODI World Cup in South Africa.

He also mentioned that the decision was already communicated to Rohit Sharma but refused to divulge information around it.

Rohit had led India to their third ICC Champions Trophy in his last stint as ODI captain, which was also the second ICC trophy India won under his leadership. However, Agarkar clarified although it was a tough decision to make but Gill was already in the scheme of things, highlighting his role as the vice-captain in the 50-over format.

Rohit also is part of the squad and joining him is Virat Kohli. The senior pros, who have already announced retirements from Test and T20Is, return to international cricket after a long absence of nine months.

Meanwhile, teams' premium pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the ODI leg of the tour to manage his workload, while promising left-hander Yashasvi Jaiswal has been recalled to the 50-over setup after a string of consistent performances in T20Is.

The ODIs are scheduled to be played in Sydney, Adelaide, and Melbourne between October 19 and 25 and will be followed by a five-match T20 series.
