Skywatchers across the globe are preparing for a rare spectacle tonight, as Comet G3 ATLAS (C/2024) reaches its peak brightness. This extraordinary comet, which appears only once every 160,000 years, offers a unique chance for observation.

The comet will come within 8.7 million miles of the Sun tonight, January 13, during its closest approach, or perihelion. Discovered on April 5, 2024, by the ATLAS observatory in Chile, G3 ATLAS has grown significantly brighter since its faint start at magnitude +19. A dramatic outburst on January 2, 2025, pushed its brightness to an estimated magnitude of -3.2, potentially rivaling Venus and Jupiter.

Viewing opportunities and challenges
Southern Hemisphere observers have the best chance to view the comet. It will be visible to the naked eye shortly after sunset under clear skies. In the Northern Hemisphere, spotting it may prove difficult due to its low position and twilight glare. Binoculars are recommended for a clearer view of this fleeting cosmic visitor.

Astronomers are monitoring the comet’s behaviour as it nears the Sun. Such proximity often raises concerns about fragmentation, a common occurrence for large comets in similar conditions.

A cosmic moment to remember
Astronaut Don Pettit captured the comet’s radiant journey from the International Space Station, further fuelling excitement. With its rare appearance and brilliant visibility, G3 ATLAS has captured the attention of stargazers and scientists alike.

For those looking to experience this historic celestial event, tonight offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to witness a visitor from the depths of the solar system as it briefly graces our skies.
