2024 has been a thrilling year for stargazers, and there’s still plenty more to see! As August wraps up, the night sky will put on a spectacular show with a parade of six planets and a meteor shower. Plus, this week, the moon will align with three different planets on three separate nights, giving us even more reasons to look up and enjoy the view.

Jupiter, Mars, and Mercury Align with the Moon

During the last week of August, Jupiter, Mars, and Mercury will appear next to the moon on different days, creating a visual spectacle. In astronomy, such an event is called a "conjunction," when two celestial bodies are seen close together in the sky. The alignment begins with Jupiter, followed by Mars, and concludes with Mercury. For those who missed the conjunction earlier in the month, this is another chance to catch these planetary pairings.

On Wednesday, 28 August, Mars will join the moon in the eastern skies just after 1:30 a.m. local time across the United States. Although they won't be as close as the earlier Saturn-moon encounter, Mars and the moon will still be within viewing distance, with Jupiter nearby as well. Then, on Sunday, 1 September, the moon will align with Mercury just before dawn, around 6 a.m. The slender crescent moon should provide an ideal backdrop for spotting Mercury, which is often hard to see with the naked eye.

Best Viewing Times and Tips

To see the celestial trio of Mars, Jupiter, and the moon, you won't need any special equipment, as they will be bright and easily visible to the naked eye. Simply look towards the eastern horizon in the early morning hours, and you'll find all three planets clustered together in the sky. However, catching a glimpse of Mercury might be more challenging due to its low brightness, particularly before sunrise. While technically visible without assistance, a pair of binoculars or a small telescope could enhance your chances of spotting it.

For those who want extra guidance, tools like Time and Date's night sky map or apps such as Sky Tonight for Android and iOS can help pinpoint the exact location of these planets and maximise your stargazing experience.

A Memorable Week for Skywatchers

With these conjunctions and a meteor shower to round off the month, August promises to be an exciting period for anyone with an interest in astronomy. Whether you're a seasoned skywatcher or a casual observer, make sure to set your alarms, step outside, and enjoy these remarkable sights.
