Scientists in Argentina have made history with a new achievement. They have produced the world's first genetically modified horses. These animals were designed to be faster than Polo Pureza, an award-winning polo mare.
Using Genetics to Boost Speed
The horses were born in October and November last year. Experts at the Argentine biotech firm Kheiron used CRISPR-Cas9 technology. This tool allows precise changes in the genes of living organisms.
Gabriel Vichera, Kheiron’s co-founder and scientific director, explained the process. "We design their genome before birth using genetic scissors," he said. This method enables scientists to cut and modify specific DNA regions.

The genes linked to speed in Polo Pureza were altered. They were then introduced into five horses to enhance their performance. These modifications improve muscle fibres, leading to faster movement. "The goal is to develop speed in a single generation," Vichera added.
Ethical Considerations and Future Plans
Vichera assured that the horses comply with Argentina's regulations. He stressed that this is not genetic doping or artificial creation. "We are using natural sequences and introducing them in a precise way," he explained.
Kheiron is also working on gene modifications for other animals. Researchers aim to develop pigs with organs suitable for human transplants. They are also modifying cows for higher protein production and heat resistance.
This breakthrough could change the future of animal breeding. It opens new possibilities for sports, medicine, and agriculture.
