A 14-year-old from Noida is making astronomical strides. Daksh Malik, a Class 9 student at Shiv Nadar School, has discovered an asteroid in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Soon, he will have the rare honour of naming it.

Recognition from NASA
The asteroid, provisionally named '2023 OG40,' was identified through the International Asteroid Discovery Project (IADP). Organised by STEM and Space and the International Astronomical Search Collaboration (IASC), the project enables students globally to help NASA identify new celestial objects. Malik and his teammates spent 18 months meticulously analysing datasets and tracking celestial objects using specialised software.

According to The Print, Malik is the sixth Indian student to discover a named asteroid. While the discovery awaits NASA's official verification—a process expected to take four to five years—Daksh is already brainstorming names, jokingly suggesting ‘Destroyer of the World’ or the ominous ‘Countdown.’

A journey of curiosity
Malik’s fascination with space began in childhood, nurtured by documentaries on planets and the solar system. His school’s astronomy club introduced him to the IASC programme in 2022. Participants were tasked with identifying potential asteroids by observing movements and light emissions in celestial objects.

“It felt like working at NASA,” Malik shared. “The experience was thrilling, and I thoroughly enjoyed it.”

Despite achieving this significant milestone, Malik’s passions extend beyond astronomy. He is equally interested in law and plans to pursue a career in the judiciary.

Support and inspiration
Malik’s mother, Sappna Kapur, said he values the process more than results. “His dedication to astronomy reflects his curiosity and determination,” she said, recalling the hours he spent observing the night sky through the school’s telescope.

His mentor, Vinita Sharat, head of STEM at Shiv Nadar School, emphasised the importance of practical learning. “True education lies in applying lessons beyond the classroom,” she said.

Malik’s discovery not only highlights his potential but also inspires others to explore science with curiosity and passion.
