Nag Panchami

Nag Panchami, a unique and revered festival in Hindu culture, is dedicated to the worship of serpents, known as Nag Devtas. One of the most fascinating Nag Panchami rituals include offering of milk to the snakes. Read below to know about its origins and whether snakes actually drink milk.

The Mythological Significance of Offering Milk to Snakes

The tradition of offering milk to snakes on Nag Panchami is deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. Snakes, especially cobras, hold a special place in Hindu culture and are associated with several Naga deities. For example, Lord Shiva is often depicted with a snake coiled around his neck. This snake is Vasuki, the King of Serpents, who played a crucial role during the churning of the ocean (Samudra Manthan).

According to legend, when the gods and demons churned the ocean to obtain Amrita (the nectar of immortality), Vasuki served as the churning rope. In gratitude for his service, serpents were granted a revered status. Offering milk to snakes on Nag Panchami is seen as an act of devotion, seeking protection and blessings from these powerful creatures.

The Symbolism of Milk

In Hindu rituals, milk is a symbol of purity, fertility, and life. Offering milk to snakes is believed to appease them and ensure the safety and well-being of the community. During the monsoon season, when Nag Panchami is celebrated, snakes are more likely to emerge from their burrows due to the rain. The offering of milk is also believed to pacify these serpents, preventing them from causing harm to humans and livestock.

Do Snakes Really Drink Milk?

While the ritual of offering milk to snakes is steeped in tradition, the question arises: do snakes actually drink milk? The answer is more scientific than mystical. Snakes are reptiles, and like most reptiles, they are not naturally inclined to drink milk. In the wild, snakes primarily consume water and obtain hydration from the prey they eat.

However, when snakes are offered milk during Nag Panchami, some may appear to drink it, especially if they are dehydrated or stressed. But this behavior is not natural or healthy for them. In fact, milk can be harmful to snakes, as their digestive systems are not designed to process dairy.

In recent years, there has been a growing awareness about the welfare of snakes, and many people are choosing to honor the festival in ways that do not involve forcing snakes to drink milk. Instead, devotees are encouraged to offer milk symbolically or to worship images and idols of snakes rather than live ones.
