Ayudha Puja 2024: Significance

Traditionally, Ayudha Puja was meant for worshipping weapons, with warriors and soldiers offering prayers to their arms and armaments. Over time, the ritual has evolved, and now it involves the worship of all kinds of tools, instruments, and vehicles. This practice holds special importance in southern states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Kerala, where it aligns with the regional culture and customs.

Ayudha Puja is often celebrated on Navami Tithi during Navratri, usually coinciding with Maha Navami. In its modern context, Ayudha Puja has expanded into Vahana Puja, where people decorate and worship their vehicles, such as cars, motorcycles, and scooters. These vehicles are adorned with vermilion, turmeric, garlands, mango leaves, and banana saplings. As part of this ritual, a white pumpkin is also decorated and smashed in front of the vehicle to ward off evil influences, ensuring the vehicle's safety and smooth functioning throughout the year.

Vahana Puja involves a detailed process of cleaning and decorating vehicles. People apply vermilion and turmeric on the vehicles as a mark of respect, and the smashing of a white pumpkin is considered a significant step in the ceremony, symbolizing the elimination of evil and protection from harm.

In South India, many calendars note Saraswati Puja alongside Ayudha Puja, as both rituals are interlinked. However, according to most Dharma Shastras, Saraswati Puja during Navratri should ideally be performed during Purva Ashadha Nakshatra, a specific time considered auspicious for invoking the goddess of wisdom and knowledge. While Ayudha Puja is focused on worshipping tools and vehicles, Saraswati Puja is dedicated to the goddess who bestows knowledge and learning, and both are celebrated with equal enthusiasm.
