What is Utpanna Ekadashi?

Utpanna Ekadashi falls during the Krishna Paksha of Margashirsha (after Kartik Purnima). It comes right after Devutthana Ekadashi and marks the origin of the Ekadashi fast itself.

According to sacred narratives, Goddess Ekadashi emerged from the divine energy of Lord Vishnu to destroy the demon Mur, who attempted to harm the Lord while He rested. From that moment, she became one of Vishnu’s powerful shaktis, associated with protection and dharma. Goddess Vaishnavi, another form of divine strength, also belongs to this sacred group known as the Sapta Matrika.

Because of this divine event, Utpanna Ekadashi is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Goddess Ekadashi, making it highly auspicious for devotees.

Why Utpanna Ekadashi is Significant?

  • Beginning of Yearly Ekadashi Vrat: Many devotees who wish to observe the Ekadashi fast throughout the year begin their journey from Utpanna Ekadashi. It is believed to purify the mind, grant spiritual strength, and bring the blessings of Lord Vishnu.
  • Removes Negative Influences: Since Goddess Ekadashi was created to destroy negativity and protect the Lord, observing this vrat is believed to remove obstacles, protect from negative energies, and support spiritual growth.
  • Brings Peace and Prosperity: The vrat is linked with divine protection, inner peace, and long-term prosperity. It is considered a highly rewarding fast for householders as well as spiritual seekers.
Utpanna Ekadashi 2025 Parana Time
  • Parana is the ritual of breaking the Ekadashi fast.
  • It must be done on Dwadashi Tithi, after sunrise. Devotees must avoid delaying beyond Dwadashi, as skipping Parana properly is considered a spiritual error.
Important Parana Rules
  • Do not break the fast during Hari Vasara, which is the first quarter of Dwadashi.
  • Preferred Parana time is Pratahkal (early morning).
  • Madhyahna (midday) Parana should be avoided.
  • If Pratahkal is missed, Parana can be done after Madhyahna.
Two-Day Ekadashi Fasting Guidelines

Sometimes Ekadashi fasting is recommended for two consecutive days:

  • For Grihastha (householders / Smartha): They should observe the fast on the first day.
  • For Sanyasis, Widows, and Moksha-seekers: The second day is suggested for them, as it aligns with deeper spiritual practices.
  • For Staunch Devotees: Those who seek complete devotion to Lord Vishnu may observe both days.
Utpanna Ekadashi Puja Vidhi

1. Morning Rituals: Wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. Clean the puja area and light a lamp before Lord Vishnu and Goddess Ekadashi.

2. Vishnu Puja: Offer tulsi leaves, flowers, incense, fruits and sweets. Chant Vishnu mantras or recite Vishnu Sahasranama.

3. Fasting Rules: Observe a complete fast or take fruits and milk as per your capacity. Maintain purity of thoughts, speech, and actions.

4. Night Vigil: Some devotees stay awake at night, chanting bhajans and remembering Lord Vishnu.

5. Parana on Dwadashi: Break the fast at the correct time mentioned above.
