What is Atla Tadde?

Atla Tadde is a traditional Hindu festival celebrated on the Krishna Paksha Tritiya (third day of the waning moon) in the month of Ashwin as per the Amanta lunar calendar. The word Atla means roti or poori made from wheat flour, while Tadde refers to the Tritiya Tithi. Hence, the name Atla Tadde symbolizes the offering of Atlu (wheat rotis) to Chandra Deva (Moon God) during the ritual.

Women observe a nirjala vrat (fast without water) throughout the day, breaking it only after sighting the moon at night. They offer Atlu to the moon, pray for their husbands’ longevity, and then eat the offerings after completing the puja.

The Atla Tadde Vrat is performed with utmost devotion and purity. Here’s the traditional step-by-step method followed by devotees:

  • Sankalp (Vow): Take a vow to observe a nirjala fast for the well-being and longevity of your husband.
  • Daytime Devotion: Spend the day remembering Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Chandra Deva by chanting mantras or reciting prayers like the Shiva Ashtakam or Parvati Stotra.
  • Evening Preparation: As evening approaches, prepare Atlu (wheat flour rotis or puris) along with other traditional dishes.
  • Moonrise Ritual: After moonrise, light a diya (lamp) and offer Arghya (water offering) to the moon along with Atlu.
  • Aarti and Prayers: Perform aarti for your husband and pray for his long and healthy life.
  • Vrat Parana (Fast Breaking): End the fast after offering prayers by eating Atlu along with your family.

Atla Tadde Significance

Atla Tadde holds deep spiritual and emotional significance for Hindu women. It represents devotion, commitment, and the sacred bond between husband and wife. Women believe that by fasting and worshipping Chandra Deva, they bring peace, health, and prosperity into their homes.

The festival also promotes togetherness among women, as they gather to sing traditional songs, share stories, and enjoy swings (oonjal), celebrating the festive spirit.

Interestingly, unmarried girls also observe this fast with faith, praying for a suitable and loving life partner. This makes Atla Tadde not just a festival of devotion, but also of hope and faith in divine blessings.
