Zoo animals' unusual behaviour during total solar eclipse leaves scientists intrigued

From giraffes to gorillas, a lot of species displayed intriguing behaviour during the solar eclipse in the US.

Scientists and zookeepers across the United States observed a fascinating yet enigmatic display of behaviour among various zoo animals on Monday during the total solar eclipse. From giraffes to gorillas, lions, macaws, and flamingos, a myriad of species exhibited behaviours that intrigued researchers, shedding light on the animals' reactions to this celestial event.

At the Fort Worth Zoo in Texas, a significant portion of the animal kingdom appeared largely unperturbed by the eclipse. However, keen observers noted a discernible shift in behaviour among certain species. "Most importantly, we did not observe any signs of increased anxiety or nervous behaviors," a spokesperson from the Fort Worth Zoo told CBS. "And by the time totality had passed, things went back to normal, almost immediately!"

Interestingly, as the skies darkened, several animals instinctively made their way towards their barns, reminiscent of their nightly routine. The Aldabra tortoises, giraffes, elephants, kudu, bonobos, coatis, and gorillas were among those observed heading towards shelter.

Nocturnal animals also displayed unusual daytime activity. At the Fort Worth Zoo, a ringtail cat and two owl species exhibited heightened levels of movement during daylight hours, indicating a departure from their typical behavior patterns.

Similarly, at the Dallas Zoo in Texas, giraffes and zebras were seen darting around during the eclipse, while chimpanzees patrolled the perimeter of their habitat with increased vigilance. An ostrich at the zoo even laid an egg during the eclipse.

At the Indianapolis Zoo, birds such as macaws and budgies adopted nocturnal behaviours, roosting quietly high above the ground. "You can hear they're totally silent now - not a peep, and no movement," Dr. Robert Shumake, President and CEO of the Indianapolis Zoo said.

In contrast, the Philadelphia Zoo, though not in the path of totality, allowed visitors to witness the animals' reactions during the partial eclipse. While most animals seemed unaffected, researchers noted subtle changes in behavior.

This recent observation echoes findings from a study published in 2020, which analysed the behaviour of zoo animals during the 2017 solar eclipse. Researchers noted that approximately 75% of species exhibited changes in response to the eclipse, often displaying behaviors typical of the evening or nighttime.

The next total eclipse in the contiguous US will occur in 2044.
