Pucisca: The Most Beautiful Gem In Croatia

Before you assume that all the villages in Croatia look the same, allow me to introduce you to a little piece of poetic paradise. Pucisca is a beautiful Croatian seaside village on the fishing island of Brac. Built alongside a water inlet, it is a well hidden, magical destination.

Pucisca is an idyllic swim stop on many cruises, and the little harbour is surrounded by stone houses, all built using local white stone and orange roofs. The houses gradually climb up the hillock, just like amphitheatre seating, to get a view of the crystal clear water. Behind them, the Biokovo mountain range looms on the horizon - a spectacular sight.

History reveals that Pucisca was once inhabited by nobles, the artisans, and the stone masons – farmers had no right to admission here. Archeological findings such as the Jupiter altar and Roman epitaph bear witness to the turbulent history that this peaceful town has seen.

The houses are big and spacious with little balconies on the upper floors. You will find many sea-bound pathways emerging from centuries ago, linking every house to the fringe of the bay.

Among the things to see on the Island is the Church of St. Jerome – a quaint structure that looks like it belongs in a Disney movie. Do step into a stone cutter’s workshop if you get the chance, as it is an integral part of Pucisca's history and heritage.

Food options although present, are limited to a handful. Kameni Cvit a family run patisserie that deceivingly looks like a bar from the outside. If you happen to step in, sample the delicious breakfast followed by a vanilla cream cannoli. Pizzeria Marin is an economical Pizzeria on the island.

Tourism is not a priority in this little town, and people are more keen to tending to their olive gardens. However, tourists can stumble upon modern simmer houses and apartments with welcoming, friendly hosts. It is also home to the island’s best hotel, the four star Deskovic Palace, housed in a cultural monument, an actual 15th-century monument.

Touristy stalls lit up signs, and souvenir stores have no place in Pucisca – just simple folk who teach you the art of solitude and simplicity to revive your body and soul.
