A video filmed in Delhi’s Punjabi Bagh area has ignited debate online after showing large heaps of post-Diwali garbage collected in front of a Shiva statue on Ring Road. The clip, recorded a day after the festival, showed discarded flowers, burnt candles, plastic packaging and remnants of puja offerings strewn across the roadside.
The video was shared by an Instagram user known as The Angry Indian. In the clip, he expressed concern about the condition of public areas after festive celebrations, questioning whether such behaviour reflected civic indifference.
In the footage, he remarked that the issue extended beyond firecrackers or pollution. Rather, it reflected a wider attitude of assuming that public spaces would automatically be cleaned the following morning. “This problem with India is that we take everything for granted. We feel that if it’s our festival to celebrate, we can do anything just because koi na koi saaf karne wala agle din aayega. Do you think this is justified for our pleasure, just for our faith?” he asked.
The video quickly went viral, drawing hundreds of responses across platforms. Many social media users commended the creator for raising an uncomfortable yet important issue about civic sense and environmental care.
One user wrote, “Good job brother! We need to shine light upon this issue. We clean our homes to invite Lakshmi but what about our neighbourhood? I’m sure Lakshmi Maa sees that as well... don’t you think?”
Another echoed the frustration, saying, “True. Every word of it. The charm is gone, and the sheer idiocy and crass way of celebrating Diwali by our so-called civic-minded citizens is for everyone to see and bear.”
A third user expressed dismay over the environmental damage caused by such carelessness, commenting, “Literally zero respect for the environment.”
Others highlighted how lack of civic awareness persisted across all sections of society. One person noted, “Most Indians have no civic sense. I feel bad when educated people are doing such things. We have to change our mindset.”
Another user pointed out that the essence of the festival was being undermined by human negligence, writing, “The unconscious and entitled people only disrespect the festival, which had a beautiful meaning, but it is the human beings that have given it a bad rep. Always the human beings with their entitlement.”
The clip has since been widely circulated across social platforms, with many users urging residents to extend their sense of cleanliness beyond their homes and towards public areas, especially during major festivals.
Municipal authorities have not issued any official statement regarding the viral video.
