A Hindu man was beaten to death by a mob over allegations of blasphemy in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka Upazila on Thursday night, police and BBC Bangla reported. The incident occurred in the Dubalia Para area of Square Master Bari.
The deceased has been identified as Dipu Chandra Das, a young man who worked at a local garment factory and was living in the area as a tenant. According to Bhaluka Police Station Duty Officer Ripon Mia, a crowd accused him of making derogatory remarks about Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), attacked him around 9 pm, and beat him to death. The attackers then tied his body to a tree and set it on fire.
Police rushed to the scene and brought the situation under control. Dipu Chandra Das’s body was later recovered and sent to the morgue of Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
No case has been filed in connection with the incident yet. “We are trying to locate his relatives. Legal action will be taken in accordance with the law once a case is filed,” Ripon Mia told BBC Bangla.
This comes as unrest has erupted in Bangladesh after death of radical political activist Sharif Osman Hadi, who succumbed to gunshot injuries while undergoing treatment in Singapore.
