Before his departure, Narendra Modi was conferred with the Order of Oman, the Gulf nation’s highest civilian honour.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Oman to a ceremonial welcome that included a guard of honour and a traditional dance performance, but images from the reception also prompted online speculation over what appeared to be a small, jewel-like accessory on his left ear.

The Prime Minister was received at the airport by Oman’s Deputy Prime Minister for Defence Affairs, Sayyid Shihab bin Tariq Al Said. Shortly after visuals of the reception were shared publicly, social media users questioned whether the item worn by PM Modi represented a new style choice.

A closer examination, however, confirmed that the object was not an earring but a real-time translation device. Such equipment is routinely used during international diplomatic engagements to assist communication when officials are interacting in different languages. Arabic is the official language of Oman.

Modi has previously drawn attention for his attire at official events, with tailored jackets and distinctive colour palettes often becoming points of discussion. Past appearances, including a bandhgala suit embroidered with his name, have also attracted widespread commentary. In this instance, the device was functional rather than stylistic and was worn during his initial engagement at the airport.

The visit itself carried diplomatic and economic significance. During his stay, India and Oman signed a free trade agreement aimed at strengthening bilateral commerce. Under the pact, approximately 98 per cent of Indian exports are expected to receive duty-free access to the Omani market. In return, India will lower tariffs on selected imports from Oman, including dates and marble products.

Before his departure, PM Modi was conferred with the Order of Oman, the Gulf nation’s highest civilian honour, by Sultan Haitham bin Tarik. The award was presented in recognition of what Omani authorities described as his “exceptional contribution” to strengthening relations between the two countries.

Acknowledging the honour, Modi posted on social media: “This is a symbol of affection and trust between the people of India and Oman.”
