Paying guest (PG) accommodations in Bengaluru have begun imposing food restrictions for residents as concerns grow over a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders, a development that is already affecting restaurants and eateries across the city.
Several PG associations in tech hubs such as Whitefield, which host a large population of IT professionals and students, have issued notices informing residents about temporary changes to food services due to the gas shortage.
One such notice issued by the Whitefield PG Owners Welfare Association said that lunch will not be available for a few days starting March 13 due to a shortage of gas cylinders. The notice also informed residents that self-cooking facilities will be temporarily suspended during the period. The association apologised for the inconvenience and urged residents to cooperate with the management.

Another notice circulating on social media from a PG facility said the restrictions would come into effect from March 10, citing disruption in commercial gas supply amid the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel in West Asia. The advisory said several food items that require more gas or deep frying would be temporarily stopped until supply returns to normal.
Deep-fried items to go out of menu
According to the notice, dishes such as dosa, puri, idly, bonda, chapati and other deep-fried items will not be prepared for the time being as they consume higher amounts of cooking gas. PG managements have also asked residents to avoid arguments with staff during the period and cooperate with the temporary changes in the menu.
The move comes after restaurants and hotels in Bengaluru recently warned that they may have to limit certain dishes and menu items due to the shortage of commercial LPG cylinders. Several establishments had indicated that items that require longer cooking times or deep frying could be restricted in order to conserve gas.
The impact is now being felt in the PG sector as well, which caters to thousands of young professionals working in the city’s technology corridor as well as students from across the country.
Similar advisories have also emerged in other cities. Recently, a hostel association in Hyderabad issued a notice asking hostel owners to reduce gas consumption and temporarily stop serving items such as dosa, chapati and puri due to concerns over commercial LPG availability.
