Made in Korea is Priyanka Arul Mohan's first movie to go straight to OTT. Ra Karthik, who is known for Nitham Oru Vaanam (released in Telugu as Aakasam), directed the Indo-Korean drama, which is also available in Telugu.
Plot:
The movie is about Shenbagam, or Shenba (Priyanka Arul Mohan), a young woman from Kolappalur in Tamil Nadu who has always wanted to go to Korea one day. She has been dating Mani (Rishikanth) for nine years, and even though her parents are worried, she runs away with him.
But her dreams come crashing down when Mani leaves her in the middle of the night. Eventually, things take her to Seoul, where she is alone in a strange country with no one to help her. Her wish to go to Korea finally comes true, but it hurts her. The main point of the story is how she handles this new place and what she learns from it.
Performances:
Priyanka Arul Mohan does a great job as Shenba. She pleasantly surprises fans with how naturally she plays innocence, weakness, and strength. Her emotional scenes, in particular, seem real and easy to understand.
Kim Young-ok, a famous Korean actress who is often called "National Grandma" in South Korea and played Seong Gi-hun's mother in Squid Game, is Omma. Her funny, warm, and moving performance gives the movie a lot of emotional depth, and her scenes with Priyanka are some of the best in the movie.
What works
The movie isn't just about the story on the surface; it also talks about themes of hope, resilience, and self-discovery of a young woman. The main point of the story is that endings can often lead to new beginnings.
Dharan Kumar's background music really makes the emotional parts better, and Hesham Abdul Wahab's songs fit the story well. The supporting cast also does a good job, which helps keep the movie's emotional tone.
What doesn’t:
The story is pretty predictable, and you can guess a lot of what happens. The story is still interesting, but a few surprises could have made the drama even better.
A lot of the conversations in the movie are in Korean because it takes place in Korea. Even though there are translations, the language changes can sometimes feel uneven, which could make some viewers feel a little lost even with subtitles.
Technicalities:
Director Ra Karthik tells the story in a simple, heartfelt way that doesn't make it more complicated. Prasanna S. Kumar's cinematography makes the movie look great by beautifully capturing Korean locations. Anthony's editing keeps the movie's runtime under two hours. The production values are clear and look good.
Verdict:
Made in Korea is a sweet, feel-good drama that works mostly because Priyanka Arul Mohan acts so honestly and the movie has a good message. There are times when the movie is predictable and times when it's hard to understand because of language barriers, but it's still an emotional and comforting experience.
If you want a simple, heartwarming story about hope and new beginnings, this Netflix movie is a good choice for a family movie night.
