Lockdown, a Tamil drama with Anupama Parameswaran, is now available on Amazon Prime Video. The streaming service has released a Telugu-dubbed version in addition to the original Tamil version so that more people can watch it.
Plot:
The story takes place during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and follows Anitha (Anupama Parameswaran), a young woman who is looking for work while living comfortably with her family. One of her friends offers to help her find work and invites her to a party.
Two months later, Anitha falls sick and finds out that she is pregnant. She is shocked by the unexpected turn of events and doesn't know how to handle it, She decides to terminate the pregnancy in secret. But before she can do anything about it, the COVID lockdown across the country makes things even harder for her. The main part of the movie is what happens next.
Performances:
Anupama Parameswaran does a good job in the lead role. The actress is known for playing both lively and emotionally challenging roles. In this case, she does a great job of showing how confused, scared, and helpless her character is. She fits the role of a young woman who is having trouble dealing with an unexpected crisis very well.
One of the few things that holds the movie together is her performance. She convincingly shows how someone who is stuck in a situation they can't control, feels.
What works and what doesn't:
The movie has a good idea, but its story is too predictable, which makes it a bit difficult to watch. The story's direction becomes pretty clear in the first few minutes. Most stories that deal with emotional problems need strong narration to keep people interested, but Lockdown doesn't do that.
The screenplay has scenes that repeat themselves and parts that go on for too long with very little happening. These scenes slow things down a lot, making the movie feel longer than it really is, which is less than two hours.
Another problem is that the supporting characters aren't used enough. Nirosha and Charle are two actors who don't get to show off their skills. Most of the characters don't add anything useful to the story, except for the friend who helps Anitha.
The climax of the movie adds a twist, but it feels rushed and sudden, which makes the story end in a way that isn't satisfying. Also, the story doesn't get better when songs are played often; they break up the flow.
Technicalities:
Director AR Jeeva tries to send an important message via his movie but the weak script and uneven execution make it less effective.
The movie also doesn't do well technically; the production values seem low and the Telugu dubbing isn't very good.
Verdict:
In the end, Lockdown is a disappointing drama. Anupama Parameswaran does a pretty good job, but the movie doesn't make a strong impression because the plot is predictable, the narration is slow, and the screenplay is weak. The movie could have been a lot better if the writing had been tighter and the story had been more interesting. As it is, it is mostly forgettable to watch on OTT.
