Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet and Google, has revealed what it takes to secure a job at one of the world’s most coveted tech companies and what he looks for in a candidate. He was in a conversation with American businessman David Rubenstein on “The David Rubenstein Show: Peer to Peer Conversations”.
When asked by Rubenstein about the best way for an entry-level candidate to land a position at Google, especially considering the company's notoriously challenging interview process, Pichai highlighted the importance of skills and adaptability.
"It depends on whether you're in engineering or something else," Pichai began. He elaborated that for engineering roles, the company seeks individuals who are not only excellent programmers but also possess a deep understanding of computer science. He said they want candidates who are open to learning and can successfully apply their skills to new situations.
“If you're in engineering, we are looking for really good programmers, people who understand computer science well and can be willing to learn and grow - apply themselves into new situations and do well,” Pichai said.
Adding that adaptability and the willingness to grow are crucial qualities Google values in its employees, Pichai had a simple answer for what he was looking for.
“We are really looking for superstar software engineers," Pichai said.

Rubenstein said Google has around 1,82,000 employees as of now. Pichai, in the interview, noted that nearly 90% of those offered a position choose to accept the job.
