Google Cloud has announced a major expansion of its AI computing capacity in India to help enterprises, developers, and public sector institutions build and deploy advanced AI models within the country.

As part of the initiative, Google Cloud and Google DeepMind are also supporting IIT Madras’ AI4Bharat in launching Indic Arena, a platform to benchmark AI models on Indian language tasks.

Indic Arena, run independently by the AI4Bharat research centre at IIT Madras, will allow users to anonymously evaluate and rank AI models based on how they perform across Indian languages and culturally specific tasks. Google Cloud is providing cloud credits to power the platform.

The expanded local compute will run on Google's AI Hypercomputer architecture with the latest Trillium TPUs, enabling customers to train and serve Gemini models in India while meeting data residency and digital sovereignty requirements.

The company said this will support high-performance and low-latency AI applications across sectors.

Google is also making more of its latest AI capabilities available with full data residency support. This includes batch processing for Gemini 2.5 Flash for high-volume tasks, a preview of Document AI to automate document workflows, and grounding support using real-time data from Google Maps to improve location-specific results.

"At AI4Bharat, our mission is to build AI for India's specific needs. A critical part of this is having a neutral, standardized benchmark to understand how models are performing across our many languages," said Mitesh Khapra, associate professor, IIT Madras.

"Indic Arena will be that platform. We are delighted to have Google Cloud's support to provide the initial compute power to bring this independent, public-facing project to life for the entire Indian AI community."

Google said it is inviting startups, universities, enterprises, and government institutions to use the expanded Gemini capacity in Vertex AI and contribute to building AI that reflects India’s linguistic and cultural diversity.
