Actor R Madhavan is now the proud owner of a brand new iPhone 15 - the first-ever model that Apple is assembling in India. Early this morning, the Rocketry star took to the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) to share a picture of his iPhone 15.

“Got it. Proud and thrilled to own the MADE IN INDIA IPHONE 15,” he tweeted. Madhavan appears to have chosen the pink variant of the device that is available in five colour options – black, blue, pink, green and yellow.

His post has collected over 6 lakh views on the microblogging platform, where many praised the actor for promoting made in India goods. Some pointed out that the iPhone 15 is only assembled, not made, in India.

As of now, only the non-Pro models are being assembled in India, which might explain Madhavan’s decision of buying the basic model rather than the high-end Pro models.

However, Apple loyalists who were hoping for a price cut, given the non-Pro models are being assembled locally, were left disappointed. Apple is charging Rs 79,900 for its most basic iPhone 15, with the price touching nearly Rs 2 lakh for the higher-end Pro models. The iPhone 15 Pro Max 1 TB version retails for Rs 1,99,900.

Pathak of Counterpoint Research offered an explanation for this: “iPhones are only assembled in India. While some parts, like the cables, are made in the country, other bits like kits and modules are still imported, because of which Apple has to pay duties and taxes which drive up prices,” he told Moneycontrol.

The iPhone 15 series went on sale in India and 40 other countries this morning after pre-bookings began on September 15. Apple's two stores in India saw a huge rush of customers today.
