China says multiple pathogens are behind spike in respiratory illnesses

The Union Health Ministry in response to recent reports indicating a surge in respiratory illnesses among children in northern China over the past few weeks, took proactive measures on November 26 to review and enhance preparedness.

The Ministry noted that preparedness is important in view of the ongoing influenza and winter season that results in an increase in respiratory illness cases and directed states/UTs to immediately review public health and hospital preparedness measures.

While the Government said it is closely monitoring the situation, it is also emphasized that there is no immediate cause for alarm.

Union Health Secretary has directed all States and UTs to urgently assess and enhance public health and hospital readiness. This includes ensuring the availability of medical resources, testing kits, oxygen plants, and ventilators. States are advised to follow the 'Operational Guidelines for Revised Surveillance Strategy in the context of COVID-19' and closely monitor trends in influenza-like illness and severe acute respiratory illness. They are also urged to send respiratory samples to Virus Research and Diagnostic Laboratories for testing.

The cumulative effect of implementation of these precautionary and proactive collaborative measures is expected to counter any potential situation and ensure the safety and well-being of the citizens.

Previously, it was reported that the epicentre of this outbreak are the Beijing and Liaoning provinces. The severity of the situation has led to the suspension of classes in some schools, as both students and teachers have taken ill. No deaths have been reported so far.

The WHO has shared information revealing a rise in respiratory illnesses in northern China, primarily linked to common causes such as Influenza, Mycoplasma pneumonia, and SARS-CoV-2. The agency had expressed uncertainty about the potential connection between the outbreak in northern China and the widespread rise in respiratory infections previously acknowledged by Chinese authorities.  It said it has asked Chinese authorities for additional details.
