Grammy award-winning music composer Ricky Kej reacted to the ongoing hullabaloo surrounding the “pure veg” mode and “pure veg” fleet launched by Zomato on Tuesday. For the uninitiated, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal announced a special “pure veg” mode on the app for people with vegetarian dietary preferences. The move sparked a significant debate across the internet.
Rallying his support for the move, Kej shared a post on X and said that he “absolutely and wholeheartedly” welcomes the new launch by Zomato. “As a vegetarian who orders food from delivery services at least once a day, I had numerous experiences of being sent chicken rolls instead of veg, meat pieces in my food, wrong orders delivered, etc."
"I have to be overly cautious each time I receive an order. It would be great to have a service that just deals with veg food since, for me, being vegetarian is not just a lifestyle choice, I am deeply invested in it with respect to environmental sustainability and other causes I feel strongly about,” he wrote further.

The brand new initiative aimed at providing a seamless experience for pure vegetarian customers from order through delivery. The “pure veg” mode would only list restaurants that serve pure vegetarian food and the “pure veg” fleet will only serve orders from these eateries.
“This means that a non-veg meal, or even a veg meal served by a non-veg restaurant will never go inside the green delivery box meant for our Pure Veg Fleet," Deepinder Goyal wrote, adding that the new service doesn’t serve or alienate any religious, or political preference.
Goyal also mentioned a special green-coloured uniform that will be donned by the delivery agents in the “pure veg” fleet. However, this move triggered divided reactions on social media. While some called it an “idiotic move” claiming that it would cause discrimination against delivery agents and people might be hostile towards those agents, others called it a “smart business move”.
Amid the backlash and citing valuable feedback from customers, Goyal announced an update to the feature and mentioned that all Zomato riders will be wearing red, instead of the green designated specially for the “pure veg” fleet.
"While we are going to continue to have a fleet for vegetarians, we have decided to remove the on-ground segregation of this fleet on the ground using the colour green. All our riders — both our regular fleet, and our fleet for vegetarians, will wear the colour red,” he wrote on X.
