'Feeling disgusted, don't know how to react': Delhi woman shares how she was harassed on DTC bus

A woman from Delhi shared how she was sexually harassed on a Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus while travelling. She took to Reddit as an anonymous user to share the post that has shocked social media users as well.

In the post, she mentioned that while travelling in a crowded bus after her office to take the metro, a man in his 50s was standing right behind him. The woman suddenly felt something hard trying to hit her from behind. At first, she didn’t realise what was happening and thought it was a mistake. She moved forward. But, the same thing happened again.

She realised what it was and turned around to shout at the man. “Thoda distance deke khade raho aap (Stand with a little distance).” “At that moment, driver put break and everyone started leaning forward. So, people got distracted, I was loud enough that at least all the people near me would listen, but bad luck. After I shouted him, he ignored it completely and moved behind, like I was talking to someone else,” she continued.

“I am so angry and feeling disgusting right now. I should have scolded him badly with cuss words. Should have been loud enough to get him kicked out of the bus. But I just kept thinking what just happened. I was shocked,” she concluded the post.

The post went viral and triggered a ton of angry, sad and frustrated reactions from Reddit users. Some women even shared their own experience in the comments.

“This is what happens when you get harassed you are totally stunned you don't even know how to react,” a user wrote. Another user commented, “Sorry, you had to go through this. It was really brave of you to tell him off. These things happen quite often. Hope you start feeling better and more power to you.”

“This comment. I was in the same situation. A guy was bumping his shoulder to mine constantly at bumps in a crowded bus. I told him to keep off but he said there isn't space. He then later started moving behind me. I felt so helpless. But I decided later that next time I will speak up. Loudly and shamelessly like some aunties do. The only way is to practise and not give a damn what others say,” a third user recalled.

A fourth user remarked, “It is a betrayal of the principles on which we rest our souls. Like humanity and socialization. There are some harsh truths of life that we do not want to accept or try to zero out.”
