Day 1: Govatsa Dwadashi – October 17, 2025

In Maharashtra, Diwali festivities start a day earlier with Govatsa Dwadashi or Vasu Baras which is dedicated to worshipping cows. This day falls on Ekadashi Tithi and marks the beginning of preparation for the main Diwali celebrations.

Day 2: Dhanteras – October 18, 2025

Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi is the first official day of Diwali. Devotees worship Lord Dhanvantari for health and wealth and perform Lakshmi Kuber Puja. It’s considered the most auspicious day to buy gold, silver, or valuables.

Day 3: Kali Chaudas / Naraka Chaturdashi – October 19, 2025 

Also known as Kali Chaudas, this day focuses on removing negative energy and performing Hanuman Puja. People light diyas, prepare sweets, and begin decorating homes for the upcoming Diwali Puja.

Day 4: Diwali / Lakshmi Ganesh Puja – October 20, 2025

The main Diwali Puja takes place on Amavasya (new moon). Devotees worship Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha for wealth, success and prosperity. Traditional business practices like sanctifying ink bottles (Davat), pens (Lekhani), and new account books (Bahi-Khate) are observed for success in financial matters.

Day 5: Diwali Snan & Devpuja – October 21, 2025

The day after Diwali, families perform Diwali Snan (ritual bathing) and worship household deities to cleanse the home and invite positive energy. It is also considered a continuation of Goddess Lakshmi Puja for financial and spiritual well-being.

Day 6: Govardhan Puja & Annakut – October 22, 2025

Govardhan Puja is celebrated with offerings to Lord Krishna, symbolizing devotion and gratitude. Devotees also perform Annakut, preparing a large variety of food for the deity, marking the abundance of harvest and prosperity.

Day 7: Bhaiya Dooj / Bhau Beej – October 23, 2025

The festival concludes with Bhaiya Dooj, celebrating the bond between brothers and sisters. Sisters pray for their brothers’ well-being and perform aarti, while brothers bless their sisters with gifts and protection.
