An Indian content creator has sparked a heated online debate after sharing videos that allegedly show a group of Indians causing a public disturbance on the streets of Central London during New Year celebrations. The clips, which quickly went viral on social media, triggered widespread criticism over public behaviour and concerns about the image of the Indian diaspora abroad.
The creator, Sarthak Tripathy, posted the videos on Instagram, documenting what he described as chaotic scenes unfolding in Central London on New Year’s night. While thousands were celebrating peacefully with friends and family, Tripathy pointed his camera towards a large group playing extremely loud music on portable speakers, dancing in the middle of the street and obstructing public movement.
In one of the clips, the group could be seen turning the road into an impromptu party zone, drawing attention for all the wrong reasons. According to Tripathy, the volume of the music and the size of the crowd made the area uncomfortable for passersby.
The situation escalated further when Tripathy shared another video showing an Indian man allegedly urinating on a public street. Calling the act “disgusting,” he urged viewers to watch the clip and reflect on how such behaviour reflects on Indians living or travelling abroad.
The videos triggered strong reactions from Indians across the world, particularly from members of the diaspora. One woman who claimed she was present that night said the experience was deeply unsettling. She wrote that multiple groups with their own speakers were roaming the streets, making women feel unsafe due to staring and inappropriate comments, while also causing embarrassment for Indian students who are trying to break negative stereotypes.
Another social media user echoed similar sentiments, saying they had witnessed comparable scenes involving Indian groups in Paris on the same night, calling the experience “extremely embarrassing.”
A third user highlighted a deeper issue, stating that some Indian students abroad view such behaviour as rebellious fun and believe they are above local laws. According to the user, even those who do not directly participate often justify it, dismissing concerns by calling it “harmless entertainment” and questioning why anyone should object.
