Prime Minister Narendra Modi has welcomed a new addition to his official residence at Delhi’s Lok Kalyan Marg – a calf born at the premises. In a video shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Saturday, the Prime Minister introduced the calf, named ‘Deepjyoti,’ citing an ancient Sanskrit scripture: “Gaav: Sarvasukha Prada:” (Cows bring all forms of happiness).
The calf was born at the Prime Minister’s residence, and in the video, PM Modi is seen affectionately interacting with it. He revealed that he chose the name 'Deepjyoti' because of a distinct mark resembling a symbol of light on its forehead. The video shows the Prime Minister seated beside the calf in a temple at his residence, gently stroking its forehead and strolling with it in his garden.

This isn’t the first time PM Modi has expressed his connection with cows. In January, during Makar Sankranti, he shared another video showing him feeding Punganur cows at his residence. The Punganur breed is native to South India, particularly the Rayalaseema region in Andhra Pradesh, and is recognised as one of the smallest humped cattle breeds in the world.
Punganur cows are known for their short stature, drought resistance, and ability to thrive in arid conditions, making them a valued breed in regions with harsh climates. Their milk is considered highly nutritious, with a higher fat content than other breeds, which has contributed to their cultural and economic significance in rural India.
The Prime Minister’s engagement with the Punganur cows earlier this year highlights his continued advocacy for the protection and preservation of indigenous breeds.
With the birth of Deepjyoti, PM Modi once again emphasised the symbolic and spiritual importance of cows in Indian tradition. The event resonated with many, considering the ongoing efforts to conserve and promote native cow breeds like the Punganur.
