Wayanad Election Result 2024: Priyanka Gandhi wins, crosses brother Rahul's victory margin

BJP spokesperson Tom Vadakkan says, "It is not a question of who wins or loses in Wayanad. It's a question of whose support you take. Demographically, it is a particular community in strength there. Despite that, you take the support of PFI, of SDPI to win elections. These are anti-national organisations. The reality is, if you win or lose, you have done something which is anti-national because they are people who are divisive and want to create an India which is part of the deep-state plot. So, we appeal to these leaders of the Congress party - stop doing this because people of India have woken..."

"There is time, trends suggested something in Lok Sabha polls and the results were completely different. Similarly, you will see that the results today will be good and in our favour. In Wayanad too, the way Priyanka Gandhi is moving ahead, it shows that whether Maharashtra or Jharkhand, Congress and its allies are going to perform well," says Congress leader Dolly Sharma.

"We were watching the election result with much expectation but unfortunately after two rounds, we are lagging behind. For the last election campaign, we only put forward the development of Wayanad mandal and we strongly believed that if the people wanted development and implementation of Central government schemes in Wayanad then they would support NDA... but it is not the case. Like in the history of Wayanad... the people have voted for just one symbol, no matter who the candidate is. I think the same scenario worked out in this election also," says BJP candidate Navya Haridas.

Priyanka Gandhi had promised to be the voice of people in Parliament. She also promised to address farmers issues and promote tourism. Gandhi also said she would try to defend the values of social harmony, secularism and social justice.

Congress candidate Priyanka Gandhi Vadra leads with 5,672 votes; CPI, BJP candidates trail in second and third spots.

Wayanad's seat was vacated by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi after he was also elected to Lok Sabha from Raebareli in Uttar Pradesh in the general elections held earlier this year.

If Priyanka Gandhi wins from Wayanad, she will be the third person from the Gandhi family to enter Parliament.

It seems to be a smooth run for Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as she has established an early lead of over 25,000 votes over her nearest rival, Sathyan Mokeri of the Left front, as per early trends.

"Wishing Priyanka to have a positive vote count and hope the people of Wayanad have chosen her to be their representative in parliament," says Robert Vadra on X.

BJP candidate for Wayanad bypoll, Navya Haridas says, "...Last time Rahul Gandhi had won from Wayanad but he rejected this Mandal and retained Rae Bareli. This time the voting percentage came down as they were not in the mood to face the election after the landslide incident. If people need development in Wayanad, then they would select NDA..."

A team led by Wayanad district collector RD Meghasree opened the strong room at Sulthan Bathery.

The Wayanad constituency comprises seven assembly segments of Mananthavady (ST), Sulthan Bathery (ST), and Kalpetta in Wayanad district; Thiruvambady in Kozhikode district; and Eranad, Nilambur, and Wandoor in Malappuram district.

After the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Rahul Gandhi retained his seat in Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh, and gave up Wayanad in Kerala where Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, his sister, made her electoral debut.

Wayanad  came into existence in 2009, following the Delimitation Commission's recommendations. Wayanad has traditionally been a Congress bastion, with the party maintaining significant influence since the constituency's creation. With Rahul Gandhi previously holding the seat, the Congress is keen to retain its dominance, while the LDF and NDA aim to make inroads in this Congress stronghold.

Navya Haridas (36) is a mechanical engineer with a B-Tech degree from KMCT Engineering College, Calicut University. She graduated in 2007. Haridas is a two-time councilor in the Kozhikode Corporation and the Mahila Morcha State General Secretary in the BJP.
