Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday singled out senior BJP leader Amit Shah as he reaped rich praise on his former Gujarat Cabinet colleague for landmark developments undertaken under his tenure as Home Minister and credited him for the rise of the National Democratic Alliance since coming to power in 2014.
Addressing NDA MPs at a Parliamentary meeting, PM Modi also congratulated Shah for earning the distinction of becoming the longest-serving Home Minister of India. Shah on Tuesday surpassed the previous record held by senior BJP veteran Lal Krishna Advani. Shah has completed a total of 2,258 days (approximately 6 years and 68 days) in office since he first assumed the role on May 30, 2019.
Shah served as Home minister from May 30, 2019, to June 9, 2024, and was reappointed on June 10, 2024.
While Advani held the position for 2,256 days (from March 19, 1998, to May 22, 2004), Govind Ballabh Pant served as home minister from January 10, 1955, to March 7, 1961, totalling 6 years and 56 days.
Shah achieved this milestone on August 5, the same date he had announced the abrogation of Article 370 in Parliament in 2019, ending Jammu and Kashmir's special status.
Reports quoting sources revealed how PM Modi praised the Home Minister’s leadership and highlighted several key developments that took place under his tenure.
Shiv Sena MP Naresh Mhaske told ANI that PM Modi lauded Shah for his contributions and congratulated him on becoming the longest-serving home minister in India’s history
“…He also praised Union Home Minister Amit Shah for uniting the parties under NDA... The Prime Minister discussed all the topics that benefit the nation and also lauded the growing economy of the country,” he said.
Under PM Modi's leadership, Shah's tenure as home minister has seen major changes in India's internal security landscape. The historic abrogation of Article 370 and the withdrawal of Jammu and Kashmir’s special status stand out as landmark decisions. Across the country, there has been a sharp decline in areas affected by Left-Wing Extremism, Naxalism, and Maoist activities.
The construction of the Ram Janmabhoomi temple, the introduction of new criminal justice laws, and the successful enactment and rollout of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) further highlight Shah's tenure as Home Minister.
Shah received praise from the Prime Minister recently for his fiery speech in Parliament and said both Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev played a vital role in eliminating terrorists.
While speaking in the Lok Sabha, Shah confirmed that all the three Lashkar terrorists who carried out the Pahalgam attack were killed by the security forces in Operation Mahadev, avenging the killings of 26 tourists on April 22.
Praising the speech, PM Modi wrote on X that Shah’s address focused on Centre's efforts towards keeping the nation secure.
“In this remarkable speech in the Lok Sabha, Home Minister Amit Shah Ji gives important details about Operation Sindoor and Operation Mahadev, which have played a vital role in eliminating cowardly terrorists. His address also focuses on our Government's efforts towards keeping our nation secure,” the PM said on X.
Meanwhile, BJP I-T Cell chief Amit Malviya took to social media to share details of Shah’s record-breaking stint. “Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s tenure has been marked by bold, historic decisions — from the abrogation of Article 370 to a firm crackdown on terrorism and strengthening of internal security,” he stated on X.
