RG Kar rape-murder: HC nixes WB govt’s appeal against life term sentence to convict, admits CBI plea

The Calcutta High Court on Friday rejected the West Bengal government's appeal challenging the trial court’s life term till death sentence awarded to RG Kar hospital rape-murder case convict Sanjay Roy, while admitting the same plea of the CBI, reported PTI. Both the CBI and the state government filed appeals before the high court seeking capital punishment for Roy, the sole convict in the case.

The division bench comprising Justices Debangsu Basak and Md Sabbar Rashidi said that since the CBI conducted the investigation and was the prosecution agency, its appeal challenging the quantum of sentence is being admitted for hearing.

An arrest warrant has been issued against actor Sonu Soon in connection to Rs 10 lakh fraud case. On Friday, news agency ANI reported that Ludhiana’s Judicial Magistrate Ramanpreet Kaur has issued an arrest warrant against Sood. The summon has been issued in connection with a fraud case of Rs 10 lakh filed by a Ludhiana-based lawyer Rajesh Khanna against one Mohit Shukla, in which he alleged that he was lured to invest in fake Rijika coin. Sonu Sood was summoned to the court to testify. An arrest warrant issued after Sood did not appear in court to testify.
