The Kolkata police revealed on Monday that Sanjoy Roy, arrested for the brutal rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, had a history of watching disturbing and violent pornography. The 33-year-old civic volunteer, who joined the force in 2019, had multiple such clips on his mobile phone.
Roy, who had been married four times, was known for his womanising behaviour and had a record of physically abusing his wives. Neighbours reported frequent domestic disputes, and his fourth wife had previously complained of domestic violence.
According to a report in The Telegraph, Roy reportedly told officers that he visited red-light areas in Kalighat and Sovabazar on Thursday night, just hours before the alleged attack on the young doctor at RG Kar.
Despite his mother's claims of innocence and suggestions that he is being framed, evidence found at the crime scene, including blood spots on his shoes and a Bluetooth headset, led to his arrest. The post-mortem confirmed that the victim was raped and murdered, suffering severe injuries including a broken neck and blood in her private parts, mouth, and eyes.
The brutal murder of the trainee doctor has sparked widespread outrage, leading to protests by doctors and nurses in Kolkata and across India. In response to the escalating unrest, Sandip Ghosh, the principal of RG Kar Medical College, has resigned from his position.
