Speaking moments after India and France issued a joint statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured that the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) is marking a new chapter in the domain of regional connectivity and trade.

France is keen to lead in this initiative, positioning Marseille as the strategic European gateway for the corridor.

The initiative, billed as a pathbreaking initiative, envisages vast road, railroad and shipping networks among India, Saudi Arabia, the United States and Europe with an aim to ensure integration among Asia, Middle East and West. The multi-national infrastructure initiative also aims to create an alternative to China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

“The project is vital for bilateral interests, enhancing strategic supply chains and boosting security in economic, energy, and health sectors across India, Europe, and the Middle-East,” PM Modi stated as he answered questions from the French press. The Prime Minister also stressed on the importance of ports within the IMEC initiative.

Posting on X, moments after answering the French press, PM tweeted: "A historic moment in Marseille! President @EmmanuelMacron and I inaugurated the Indian Consulate in this vibrant city, marking a new chapter in India-France ties. This consulate will serve as an important bridge, strengthening our cultural, economic and people-to-people connections. Marseille’s links with India are well known. During the First World War, it was an important base for Indian troops. This city has a close link with Veer Savarkar as well. On this special opening, I thank the French Government and congratulate the Indian diaspora."

In the joint bilateral readout, two leaders recalled the launch of the India-Middle East-Europe Corridor (IMEC) on the margins of the G20 Summit in Delhi in September 2023 and agreed to work together more closely on implementing the initiative.

Both leaders stressed the importance of IMEC to foster connectivity, sustainable growth trajectories and access to clean energy across these regions. In this regard, they acknowledged the strategic location of Marseille in the Mediterranean Sea.
