The Election Commission of India (ECI) has revised polling date for Haryana from October 1 to October 5, 2024 and accordingly counting day for J&K and Haryana assembly elections from October 4 to October 8, 2024.
The decision has been taken to honour both the voting rights and the traditions of the Bishnoi community, which has upheld a centuries-old practice of participating in the Asoj Amavasya festival celebration in remembrance of their Guru Jambheshwar, according to the Election Commission.
Earlier, chief election commissioner Rajiv Kumar had announced that Haryana assembly polls would be held in a single phase on October 1 while the counting would be done after three days.

He said generations of families from Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana visit their native village Mukam in Rajasthan on 'amavas' in the month of 'Asoj' for the annual festival in Bikaner in the memory of Guru Jambheshwar.
This year, the festival falls on October 2 and thousands of Bishnoi families residing in Sirsa, Fatehabad and Hisar will be travelling to Rajasthan on the day, denying them their voting rights.

The term of the legislative assembly of Haryana will end on November 3.
Apart from Haryana, Jammu and Kashmir will also vote in three phases on September 18, September 25 and October 1. The counting of votes will now take place on October 8 instead of October 4 that was planned earlier.
