Heavy overnight rainfall in Uttarakhand on Monday night has resulted in the Tamsa river overflowing, flooding the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple in Dehradun, and triggering widespread destruction across the region.

Temple priest Acharya Bipin Joshi, speaking to reporters on Tuesday morning, said the river began swelling around 5 am, submerging the entire temple premises.

“This kind of situation had not taken place in a very long time. The entire temple was submerged, though the sanctum sanctorum remains safe. People should avoid going near rivers at this time. No human loss has been reported so far,” he told reporters.

The incessant rains have battered large parts of Dehradun, damaging roads, homes, shops, and hotels.

In the Sahastradhara area, the river's floodwaters swept debris into the main market, severely damaging commercial establishments.

Mal Devta and Mussoorie also reported destruction, with one death in Mussoorie under verification and two to three people missing in Dehradun, Disaster Management Secretary Vinod Kumar Suman confirmed.

A bridge near Fun Valley and Uttarakhand Dental College on the Dehradun–Haridwar National Highway was washed away, cutting off road connectivity.

In Rishikesh, the Chandrabhaga river overflowed onto the highway, trapping several vehicles. The SDRF rescued three people stranded in the river, while relief teams shifted 300–400 residents from vulnerable areas to safety. Students trapped amid waterlogging at the Dev Bhoomi Institute on the Dehradun–Vikasnagar road were also evacuated.

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said he was monitoring the situation closely.

“Received the sad news of some shops getting damaged due to heavy rains in Sahastradhara, Dehradun, late last night. District administration, SDRF, and police are engaged in relief and rescue operations. I am personally in touch with the local administration. I pray to God for everyone’s safety,” he wrote on X.

According to authorities, a cloudburst on the outskirts of Dehradun likely triggered the sudden flooding and landslides. SDRF and NDRF teams have been deployed for rescue and relief.

The disaster comes just weeks after a devastating cloudburst in Uttarkashi’s Dharali area on August 5 caused flash floods and landslides that destroyed homes, hotels, and homestays, leaving several people dead or missing.
