2 missing, shops washed away after heavy rain triggers cloudburst in Dehradun

Two people have been missing after heavy rainfall triggered a massive cloudburst in Uttarakhand’s Dehradun in the early hours of Tuesday, destroying several houses and washing away cars and shops.

Rescue and relief operations are currently underway in the region, with the NDRF and SDRF teams reportedly deployed at the affected locations.

"Damage have been reported from Sahastradhara and Mal Devta in Dehradun, and also from Mussoorie. Two to three people are said to be missing in Dehradun. A death has been reported from Mussoorie and is being verified," disaster management secretary Vinod Kumar Suman told PTI.

Uttarakhand chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said he was in constant touch with the local administration and monitoring the situation.

“Some shops have been damaged due to heavy rain in Sahastradhara, Dehradun, late last night. District administration, SDRF, and police have reached the spot and are engaged in relief and rescue operations. I am constantly in touch with the local administration in this regard and am personally monitoring the situation,” he said in a post on X.

According to an India Today report citing an order by the district magistrate, all schools from Class 1 to 12 have been shut in view of the heavy rainfall and cloudburst.

Heavy rainfall in Dehradun caused the Tamsa river to swell and inundated the Tapkeshwar Mahadev temple, one of the city's most prominent shrines. Water entered the temple courtyard and rose to the statue of Hanuman, though the sanctum sanctorum remained safe.

Meanwhile, officials said that heavy rains have also impacted Rishikesh, where the Chandrabhaga river has been flowing above normal levels since morning, with water reaching the highway.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and avoid venturing near swollen rivers and streams.
