ITR Filing Due Date Extension Live: Why was ITR filing deadline extended?

The extension of the income tax return (ITR) filing deadline was announced after taxpayers and chartered accountants reported persistent glitches on the official e-filing portal. Many cited a sluggish website and frequent outages, urging the authorities to give more time for filing ITRs.

ITR Filing Due Date Extension Live: What to keep in mind while filing income tax return

Mismatch in Records

Many taxpayers forget to reconcile details in Form 16, Form 26AS, and the Annual Information Statement (AIS) before filing their returns. Discrepancies can trigger notices from the department and may lead to delays or adjustments in refunds. Always cross-check these documents to ensure consistency.

Errors in Personal Details and ITR Verification

Refunds are issued only to pre-validated bank accounts. Mistakes in account numbers, IFSC codes, or personal details such as PAN, email, or mobile number can hold up payments. Also, remember that filing isn’t complete until you e-verify your return through Aadhaar OTP, net banking, or other approved methods.

Non-Disclosure of Foreign Assets and Income

Taxpayers are required to report all foreign assets and income—including overseas bank accounts, investments, or property—on their annual tax return. Failing to do so can attract hefty penalties and even legal consequences.
