Goregaon, located in the Mumbai (Suburban) district, is a significant Assembly constituency in Maharashtra. This unreserved seat falls under the Mumbai North West Lok Sabha constituency and is home to a rich mix of indigenous communities, including the Bombay East Indians, Panchkalshi or Somvanshi Kshatriya Pathare (SKP), and the Koli people.

The area benefits from excellent connectivity through Mumbai's local train network, with Goregaon station serving as both a starting and terminating point for many local trains. Marathi is the predominant language spoken in this constituency, reflecting the cultural diversity of the region.

Goregaon constituency candidates for 2024

Several key candidates are contesting in the Goregaon constituency for the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections:

BJP's Vidya Thakur, the incumbent MLA, has previously won two consecutive terms and is aiming to retain the seat. Thakur is pitted against Samir Kamalakar Desai, representing the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena faction (Shiv Sena-UBT), part of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) alliance. In addition, Virendra Jadhav is contesting on behalf of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).

Political Shifts and Alliances

The 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections saw the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) forming the government. However, the political landscape shifted dramatically when the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena broke away from the NDA to form the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) with the NCP and Congress, with Thackeray assuming the role of Chief Minister.

In 2022, Eknath Shinde, along with 40 MLAs, rebelled against Thackeray’s faction and allied with the BJP, resulting in the collapse of the MVA government. Shinde then became Chief Minister under the reconstituted Maha Yuti alliance, comprising the BJP and Shinde-led Shiv Sena.

The political turmoil continued into 2023 when the NCP witnessed a split. Ajit Pawar, a senior leader, broke away from Sharad Pawar and joined the Maha Yuti, further strengthening the alliance between the BJP and Shinde’s Shiv Sena. As a result, the state’s political scene is now divided into two key factions: the MVA (Shiv Sena-UBT, NCP-Sharad Pawar faction, and Congress) and the Maha Yuti (BJP, Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar-led NCP).

Goregaon constituency election and results dates

With Maharashtra gearing up for elections on November 20, the Goregaon constituency will be one of the key battlegrounds. The results for this seat, along with others across the state, will be announced on November 23.
